Workshops at the Blumenschein Art CenterOurselves and Taos Neighbors," by Ernest Blumenschein, oil on canvas.
The Blumenschein Home and Museum is proud to offer you these wonderful workshops this coming year. We are pleased that Scott, Susan and Laura have agreed to share thier knowledge with you. The Blumenshein Art Center is housed in the historic East Studio at the Museum. Blumenschein added the northlight studio to his home in the early 30's. Ernest taught a group of Japenese Students here and we are please to continue that tradition by offering workshops.

October 14th - 17th Laura Robb: Still Life in Oi

We are delighted to have Laura Return to the Blumenschein Art Center

This workshop is for students who are serious about advancing their skills of observation and want to understand how to make use of their palette to its full advantage. The instructor will explain and show through demonstration studies how certain effects of light and depth can be achieved. She will also try to help identify materials or procedures a student may be using that are getting in the way of their progress.

We will discuss composition, technique, principles of light and shade and a range of other painting related topics. Almost all of the lessons will apply to any medium or subject matter but the focus will be specific to still life in oil. Demonstrations will be done with the intent of illustrating how to handle specific problems rather than producing an entire finished painting and during the class students will be encouraged to adopt a similar attitude with an emphasis on learning and study. Previous experience in mixing color is necessary. It will be 4 days of intense concentration—but fun too. Bring a sense of humor.

Laura Robb grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and entered art school at the age of sixteen. In 1974, Laura moved to New York City to study with Michael Aviano, and after returning to the Southwest, had the opportunity to receive critiques of her work by Richard Schmid. Since moving to Taos, New Mexico in 1986, Laura's art travels have taken her to France, Spain, Guatemala, and across the United States. She has exhibited in numerous group and one person shows and received many awards. Her paintings, in both watercolor and oil, portray a variety of subject matter. She continues to create still-life, figurative and landscape works from her studio near Taos, New Mexico.

September 9th-14th - Susan Lyon and Scott Burdick

Once in a lifetime opportunity to paint in Blumenschein's studio with Susan Lyon and Scott Burdick.

Susan and Scott will be doing a six-day workshop in Taos, NM September 9th – 14th, 2013 in the historic studio of E.L. Blumenschein at the Blumenschein House and Mueseum. We are limiting the class size to only ten students and this will make it a very intensive study with both Susan and Scott instructing such a small and intimate group.

Blemenschein has always been one of our favorite artists, so the change to actually paint models in period costumes in his studio is a once-in-a-lifetime chance we couldn't pass up.

This is a rare opportunity, the museum does not hold workshops in this historic studio often and this will probably be the only chance we get to have a VIP pass into this amazing place.

Class Description for 6 day workshop taught by Susan Lyon and Scott Burdick in the historic studio of E.L. Blumenschein in Taos, NM.

This is an Oil painting workshop –The teachers will demonstrate from 9 – 12 pm lunch break then the students will paint from 1 – 4 pm.

The first 3 days will be taught by Susan, she will focus on painting the portrait with an emphasis on drawing and value.

Each morning she will show the class oil paintings from masters that inspire her; she will discuss why these paintings

capture our attention and how we can learn from them. After seeing some of the paintings from Master artists, she will demo each morning for 2 hours. In the afternoon the class will work from a live model in costume. We will focus on the portrait for the first 3 days of class.

The last 3 days will be taught by Scott, who will focus on how to create a pleasing composition of the model in a scene. Each morning Scott will demonstration a different approach to painting a model in the interior of the historic studio of Master artist E.L. Blumenschein. The model will pose in period costume using the incredible studio as background.
